Jacobsen When a person runs a personal ad, one of the key benefits is being able to "screen" for what you're looking for, such as age, part of town, common interests, kids or no kids. You get the idea. So a good ad (including the on-line greeting) gives you important information about the advertiser. And the advertiser expects similar information from the person who answers the ad. There are people who reply by saying, "Hi, I'm Pat. I liked your ad. Call me." Wow. Isn't that motivating. To leave the kind of reply that gets you an answer, follow these pointers: 1. If you are replying to a voice mail system, actually LISTEN to the greeting. The greeting usually gives much more information than the ad, so pay attention to determine whether you really are a good match for the person. Jot some notes. 2. Tell what attracted you to their ad. One way to start your reply is to say, "You sound like someone I'd like to know because . . .." 3. Tell how you match what they are looking for. This shows you've paid attention and makes them feel special. 4. Be realistic. If you DON'T match something they've mentioned, say so. Being honest up front will generally get you some extra points. For instance, "I'm a serious mountain biker like you, but I have to admit I haven't really done any camping." The lack of a "match" may mean you won't get a return call, but if this was going to be a rejection anyway, it's best to have it happen up front. 5. If there are other things about you that could be a factor, put them in your reply. "I have custody of my two kids." "I don't watch tv; I don't even own one." Again, if a rejection is inevitable, now's the best time for it. On the other hand, these may make you even more appealing to the person hearing your reply. 6. If you are replying by phone, give your first name and phone number - twice. Even the most sophisticated recording device can lose a little something in the translation to the ear and since your name and phone number are the key to this transaction, giving them twice is essential. ************************ Singles Site of the Week - Going through a relationship breakup?
