Jacobsen CHARLES ATLAS WAS WRONG. If you're bulking up to get the girls, forget it. The American Journal of Psychiatry reports on a survey that found that college-age men want (and think women desire) a body with at least 27 more pounds of muscle than the guys actually have. Women, on the other hand, said they preferred guys with a more typical, less muscular body. The chief researcher noted, "Our anecdotal experience has suggested that men actually want to look bigger to other men. If you tell them that women don't like them that big, that still won't deter them." In fact, the researchers suggest that men may be falling victim to an increase in media images of muscular men. For instance, on human scale the 1965 GI Joe had 11.5 inch circumference biceps, about like an ordinary guy. GI Joe in 1995 had 26 inch biceps -- bigger than any bodybuilder in history. YARD SIGN ATTRACTS DATES. The Orlando Sentinel reports that while Roy Layton, a 40-year-old single guy was out of town, some friends posted what looked like a For Sale sign on his lawn, but it read "Single guy. Owns home. Has job. Ask for Roy." With an arrow pointing to his front door. Roy returns home, thinks it's cute and leaves it there a while. Long enough, in fact, that women have been dropping by to talk, invited him to parties, and evenings out. So far, says Roy, no weirdos. WOMEN EQUAL ON-LINE. Forget the image of geek-guys on the web and men dominating the internet world. The Associated Press reports that a May study of 55,000 home and business users concluded that today women make up 50.4 percent of U.S. internet users. (Women are 51.1% of the U.S. population.) MARRIAGES UP AND DIVORCES DOWN, A BIT. The National Center for Health Statistics reports that for the twelve months ending September 1999 the marriage rate rose slightly over the previous year, from 8.3 per thousand population to 8.4. This is down from 9.1 in 1997, however. Meanwhile, the divorce rate dropped slightly, from 4.3 to 4.1. ************************ Singles Site of the Week - Citing "financial realities," Focus on the Family Periodicals have announced that they are ending publication of the six-year-old Single-Parent Family magazine in December. Instead they will create a specially designed edition of the Focus on the Family magazine targeted to single parents. The new edition will be complimentary. But meanwhile the magazine has a web site at www.singleparentfamily.com. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Advice from Aunt Janet -- People are attracted to the familiar -- to people they think are like themselves. When you are going out to meet people, keep in mind how the people you would like to meet are likely to be dressed, and dress in a similar way. ************************* ALL SINGLES DANCE SCHEDULE: 8 Scottsdale Radisson, 7171 N.
