Jacobsen Singles head almost as many households as married couples today. But we don't get much recognition for our impact on economic forces. Just consider: about 25% of households are a spouse-free person, living alone. What if all those folks succumbed to the political pressure to "save the family" and got married tomorrow? That would mean suddenly 12% of America's households were available for occupancy -- probably for sale. Whoa! Major impact. Plus we'd all stop buying stuff because when combining two households you wind up with WAY more stuff than you need, regardless of the stuff! So less retail sales, further depressing the economy! I met a friend for dinner at a restaurant recently and despite the fact that the restaurant was not overflowing, the parking lot was full. So we concluded that lots of the folks there, like us, had each arrived in a car alone. If America suddenly becomes all couples, lots of places could make do with smaller parking lots, making more land available, once again lowering property prices. Why, you might even say that single-handedly singles could jump-start the slowing economy by just refusing to get married for awhile. Save America - stay single! Singles head majority of households in 135 congressional districts To commemorate National Singles Week, Sept. 16-22, the American Association for Single People are delivering certificates to 123 members of the House of Representatives and 12 members of Congress representing districts where the majority of households are headed by unmarried adults. The documents are called "Census Bureau Certification of Unmarried Majority District." The group has also contacted elected officials in six states, asking them to officially proclaim National Singles Week because the majority of their households are headed by single adults. The states are New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Nevada, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Mayors in several "unmarried majority" cities have also been contacted. The American Association for Single People is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization promoting the well being and rights of unmarried individuals, couples, parents and families. Any adult may join for a tax-deductible donation of $10, and receive newsletters and access to all areas of the organization's website, unmarriedAmerica.com. Contact AASP at 415 E. Harvard St., #204, Glendale CA 91205; phone 888-295-1679, or email at unmar-@earthlink.net. *********************** Advice from Aunt Janet -- Plan a celebration! National Singles Week Sept. 16-22. You're single, you have single friends, they have single friends. Here's a great excuse to get them all together: National Singles Week! Arrange for a suitably large location -- a picnic site at a local park would do -- and then plan a potluck, inviting all your single friends, and urging them to invite all their friends, on and on. You can make it an evening, or on the weekend. Or both! Everyone brings their own table service and beverages, and you share whatever shows up in the way of food. With a singles event, it's always WAY more food than you know what to do with! (That's the trouble with inviting COUPLES to a potluck; they only bring one dish between them.) The "program" for the day is each person announcing one thing they really like about being single. A good time to be had by all! Start planning today! + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Featured web site: Our former office manager, Jeff Jacobsen, recommends www.trip.com/trs/trip/flightracker/flight_tracker_home.xsl as a great site for tracking an airline flight.
